Beginner Photoshop Tutorial: 5 Easy Photo Effects

Retouch your photos with these five easy photo effects.
These Photoshop tutorials will show you how to create some of the most popular photo effects using
professional non-destructive editing techniques.
You’ll need Photoshop CS4 or newer to follow these tutorials.
The first effect you’re about to see is an awesome way to give your flat photos a contrast boost.
This photo effect uses just one black and white adjustment layer!
To start, click on the “New Adjustment Layer” button in the layers palette then choose Black & White.
Set the blending mode of this layer to Soft Light.
Adjust the settings as you like in the adjustments palette.
If you don’t see this palette, go to Window > Adjustments.
You can use this slider here to directly select a color in the image to adjust.
So let’s say I want to make this sky darker, just click and drag to the left.
For the trees, I’ll make them brighter by dragging to the left. It’s that easy!
Here’s the before and after of this contrast boost photo effect!
The first photo effect we just showed you is great for flat-looking photos.
Now we’re going to show you a photo effect for those high contrast outdoor photos.
This photo effect gives your photos that old-school retro look and you can do it non-destructively without even creating a new layer.
First, unlock the background layer so we can apply a layer style to it.
To do this, just double-click on the layer. You’ll get a window with some layer properties; just click OK.
Right-click on the layer then choose Blending Options.
Select the Color Overlay options then set the blend mode to Exclusion and opacity to 25%.
Next, click on the color then pick any color you like. I’m going to pick this one right here.
Here’s what the effect looks like!
Next up is a quick and easy way of giving your photos a dreamy look.
We can apply this using Smart Filters.
Start by converting the layer into a Smart Object.
Right click on the layer then choose Convert to Smart Object.
Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.
Adjust the settings so that you get a blur like this then click OK.
Double-click on the blending options button here then change the blending mode to Screen.
Adjust the opacity to your likings then click OK.
That’s the soft fog effect! Here’s what it looks like before and after.
The next photo effect is subtle but gives your photo a really nice antique feel.
This effect works great on portraits.
Start by creating a new Hue-Saturation adjustment layer.
To do this, click on the New Adjustment Layer button then choose Hue-Saturation.
Select the Sepia preset. If you don’t have this preset, enable the colorize option then set your hue to 35 and saturation to 25.
Right-click on the layer then choose Blending Options.
In the Blend If area, hold down the Alt or Option key on a Mac then drag the black input slider all the way to the right.
The slider will detach from the other half and give you a smooth blending as you drag it towards the right.
Click OK.
Here’s the half sepia effect! It’s a nice subtle effect for portrait photos.
The final photo effect you’ll learn is a Lomo color effect.
It gives your photos a color pop just like some Lomo cameras and is surprisingly easy to do.
Start by creating a new Levels adjustment layer.
Click on the New adjustment layer then choose Levels.
Select red from the drop down menu then drag the black and white input slider towards the middle like this.
We’re going to finish this Lomo effect with a vignette.
Before you add one, right click on the background layer then choose Convert to Smart Object.
This will let us apply the vignette as a Smart Filter which lets you go back and change the settings anytime you like.
Go to Filter > Lens correction. In the Custom tab, adjust the vignette to -100 then click OK.
Here’s the Lomo photo effect!
Give these photo effects a try and let us know how it went for you in the comments.
Here’s a final recap of the five easy photo effects.
Subscribe to us for more great Photoshop tutorials!

Photoshop CS6: How to Make an Editable TEXT Portrait from a Photo.

Hi, this is Marty from Blue Lightning TV.
Quite a while ago, I did a tutorial showing how to make a portrait out of text.
In this tutorial, I'll show you how to do it quicker and better.
Including how to make it in color.
You can mix fonts and sizes and because they're "live", they're fully editable.
Feel free to use any photo you'd like.
If you want to use this image,
its link is located in the video's description or project files.
Its size is approximately, 1300
by 1900 pixels
with the resolution of 150 pixels per inch.
If you're using a color photo
desaturate it by pressing Ctrl + Shift + "u" on a PC
or Cmd + Shift + 'u" on a Mac.
To make the darkest tones, black
and the lightest tones, white...
press Ctrll or Cmd + Shift + "L".
We need to make a selection around the head and shoulders.
For this example, I'll use the Pencil tool.
First, click on your quick mask button...
and make sure black is your foreground color.
If it isn't,
click on this small black and white box icon.
Open your pencil tool.
We'll make the Size...
5 pixels and the Hardness... 100%.
Draw around the head and shoulders. It doesn't have to be perfect, especially
around the hair.
Open your paint bucket tool.
Click down inside the portrait to fill it in.
Press "Q" to make the quickmask into a selection.
Invert it...
by pressing Ctrl or Cmd + Shift + "i".
Go to Select and Save Selection.
Name it, "Highlights"...
and click, OK or press Enter or Return.
Delete the selection
by pressing Ctrl or Cmd + "d".
Press Ctrl or Cmd + "j" to make a copy of the original image.
Go to Filter...
and Filter Gallery.
Open the "Artistic" folder...
and click
"Cutout".
Make the number of Levels, 2...
the Edge Simplicity, 5...
and the Edge Fidelity, 1.
Then, click OK.
Go to Image...Adjustments...and Threshold.
The Threshold is 128.
Go to Select
and Color Range.
Select...
Shadows...
and click, OK.
We'll save the selection
and name it, "Shadows".
Then, delete the selection.
Click on the new layer button
to make a new layer.
We'll fill it with White...and since white is our background color,
press Ctrl or Cmd + Delete.
Go to Window... and Character.
In the Character panel,
choose a font that has at least 2 weights.
I'm using, "Arial".
For the Highlights of the portrait,
I'll use, Arial Regular.
The Size is 8 points and the "Leading" is 7 points.
"Leading" is the amount of space between the lines of text.
Press the "All Caps" icon.
This makes the text all caps even if the original text is upper and lower case.
Go to the top, left corner... click down...
and drag it of the bottom, right corner.
This "text box" or "bounding box"...
makes the text we place inside this area, conform to the dimensions of the
box.
If you re-size the bounding box, Photoshop adjusts the wrapped ends of the text to
account for the new size.
For this example, I'll fill it with Lincoln's
"Gettysburg Address".
I already searched for it in my browser.
When you find the text block you'd like to use in your portrait,
highlight it...
and press Ctrl or Cmd + "c" to copy it.
I'll minimize the browser's window...
click down inside the top, left corner of the bounding box
and press Ctrl or Cmd + "v"...
to paste the text into it.
Click on the thumbnail of the text to accept it.
Press, "z" to open your Zoom tool.
Zoom into your text...
and click on your Type tool.
Let's make the entire text block into one unbroken paragraph.
I'll click to the left of the first character...
and press the Backspace key to move it to the left, so it's flush with the
bounding box.
I'll click to the left of the first character of the second paragraph...
and press the Delete key...
until the text moves up to meet the first paragraph.
Continue until we have one unbroken paragraph.
Highlight it...
and copy it.
Press Ctrl or Cmd + Zero...
to see the entire document on your screen.
Click to the right of the last character and paste in the text.
Continue to paste the text in until all of the bounding box is filled with the
text.
To get rid of the uneven lines of text on the right,
go to the middle, right of the bounding box...
and press and hold Ctrl on a PC
or Cmd on a Mac.
When you see this white pointer,
drag it to the right.
Then, click on the thumbnail of the text layer to accept it.
Let's name it...
"Highlights"...
and then make a copy of it.
Click off the eyeball of the original text to hide it...
and we'll name the copy...
"Shadows".
Double-click on the thumbnail to highlight the text...
and change the font to the heaviest weight.
Make the size, 12 points...
and the Leading, 9 points.
Click on the thumbnail to accept it.
Open your Channels panel...
and Ctrl-click...
or Cmd-click on the Shadows thumbnail to make it into a selection.
Open back up to you Layers panel...
and click on the Layer mask button...
to make a layer mask next to the active layer, which is the Shadows text.
Make the Highlights text layer, visible...
and active.
Go back to your Channels panel...
and Ctrl-click or Cmd-click on the Highlights thumbnail...
to make it into a selection...
and then go to the Shadows thumbnail...
and press Ctrl+ Alt on a PC
or Cmd + Opt on a Mac...
to subtract the shape from the Highlights shape...
leaving just the highlights of the portrait.
Open back up your Layers panel...
and click on the layer mask button to make a layer mask next to the highlights
text.
As I mentioned at the beginning,
the text is "live" and editable...
so for example, if we want to increase the size of the text in the shadow areas,
double-click on the thumbnail of the Shadows text to highlight all the
text
and type in a higher number.
To accept it, click back on the thumbnail.
To modify the size of the text in the highlight areas,
make the Highlights layer active...
and double-click on the thumbnail to highlight all the text.
I'll change point size to 6...
and click on the thumbnail to accept it.
Next, I'll show you how to make your portrait into full color.
Make the top layer active...
and click on the new layer button to make a new layer.
We'll fill it with White...
and since White is our foreground color
press, Alt or Opt + Delete.
Hide the layer...
open your Channels panel...
and click on the dotted, circular icon at the bottom to select all the tonal values
of your image.
Open back up your layers panel and make the white layer visible.
Invert the selection...
by pressing Ctrl + Shift + 'i" on a PC
or Cmd + Shift + "i" on a Mac.
To hide the selection,
press Ctrl or Cmd + "h".
Let's fill the selection with gradient colors.
Open your Gradient tool...
and click on the gradient bar to open the gradient editor.
Click on the lower, left "stop"...
and the color box.
Pick a color...
click, OK...
and click on the lower, right "stop".
Pick another color...
and close the windows.
I'll choose a linear gradient.
Have fun experimenting with all the different types of gradients.
Go to the top of your document...
press and hold, Shift...
drag down the gradient to the bottom...
and release.
A quick way to change the colors of the gradient...
is to click on the adjustment layer button...
and choose, Hue Saturation.
By sliding the amounts of Hue...
Saturation and Lightness,
you can non-destructively change the color of your portrait.
This is Marty from Blue Lightning TV.
Thanks for watching!

Photoshop tutorial: Creating a planet | lynda.com

In this movie what we are going to do is we are going to put a distant planet right here.
Because we are on a moon of this planet. It's going to be about half the size of our existing
file, so when we look at the file here we see that it's 32 inches high. So what we are
going to do is create a new file, and we'll make it a little smaller, let's say we'll
make it 72 just like what we are working at 72, and we'll set this up to Inches, and we
are going to make it 24 Inches high, and we'll make it 24 Inches square, there we go, and
we'll click OK. So here is our new file where we are going to create our planet. So what
I'm going to do is I'm going to get my Elliptical Marquee tool and right from the center here
I'm going to hold my Option and Shift keys--Option will help me draw from the center out and
the Shift will constrain it to a perfect circle--and I create this big circle about like that.
That's going to be my planet. I'm going to create a new layer, right here, and I'm going
to just fill it with, it doesn't matter just fill it with black because that's not going
to be the color. But to use the next filter, which is what I'm going to use to create the
planet, I do need to have something inside that space. So now I'm going to and pick the
colors for my planet. So I'm going to go in here, and we're going to pick this kind of
an orangey color right here, nice light kind of beige color there like that okay. And then
for the background we are going to go with that family but go really dark like say this
guy down here, click OK. So we'll keep it as a similar color scheme to our actual moon
back here. So now that we have that in that planet, or that selection, I'm going to add
a filter, and it's Render > Fibers, and there's Fibers. Now I can play around with the Variance
to get all kinds of different details and such, but I'm just going to go with a little
Variance I start getting these nice little tones like that, and I'm going to click OK,
and I'm going to get that texture right there. Now that I have that texture, that's going
to work for me, I'm going to start to give it that roundness by giving it another Filter
here, under Distort we have Spherize, which I'm going to go in there, set to 100% I'm
going to go ahead and say do it. And then I'm going to apply it again, so I'm going
to apply it a few times until it starts to have that really round kind of sense of the
planet that I'm trying to create. One more time should do it, maybe one more just for
fun, there, now we have this planet. It starts to have a feeling of something like Jupiter
or something, we might even want to throw a couple of storms in there but we'll do that
in another of our dreamscapes later. But there we see that we have this nice kind of a texture
for our planet. And you know, just for the fun of it, I'm going to go in here, and I'm
going to get a Lasso, and I'm going to select a little Feather for it, I am going to do
a Feather of 20. Now this is set to Pixels. So 20 is quite high because we are working
at 72 dpi, if we were working at a 300 dpi, 20 isn't that match. So keep that in mind
when you are setting some of these things that are set to Pixels. So I'm going to go
in here, and I'm just going to select a little area right in here, like so, just like that,
and I'm going to go to another filter, which I have a filter down here which is called
Liquify. And Liquify, what I'm going to do is I'm going to do some weird stuff to this.
I'm going to make my brush a little bigger and right in there I'm going to do something
like little twisting just to twist this around like that just to start forming a little storm
kind of a thing happening in that area right there just to add a little more variety to
our little planet just like that just a little distortion, click OK, and there we see that
we have this little distortion happening to our planet, that's the portion that we are
going to see right in there. Now, I'm going to take this and rotate it so that our planet
is going to be kind of shaped like that. Well, maybe we'll even turn it this way, yeah that
looks good, see we could do anything we want until we have exactly what we would like it
to look like, and there is about the shape that we are going to have. In the next movie
what we are going to do is we are going to add some rings to this planet.

How to create 3D text - Blender 2.66 Tutorial

hello and welcome to another blender tutorial in this video i'm going to be
showing you how to make a similar text to what you see here i'm not going to be
getting into materials scenes lighting or anything like that. Just the text itself.
I'm going start by going into my 3d view and deleting the text I have created.
I'm going to add a new text by pressing shift a and selecting text.
Then I'm going to press R X and type in 9 0 to rotate it 90 degrees forward
Now to change the text from saying text. Select the text and press tab
and then you can enter your own input. I'm going to put "movie title".
Next we're going to change the look of the text. To do that go into your
text options by pressing on f here. You can change things like resolution.
If I zoom in here you can see there's kind of jagged edges
If you're doing high-resolution images you're going to need to increase that so
you don't get those horrible jagged edges as they will show up expecially
high resolutions like 4k (Ultra HD)
Next we're going to change the geometry i'm going to extrude this text to give it a 3d look.
I'm going to go point four. (0.4)
That should be enough for this example.
I'm going to make that is rather than just two faces meeting. I'm going to
give them some bevel. Point zero zero five ( 0.005) should be enough
and i'm going to make that bevel smooth rather than a flat surface. So i'm going
to give twelve for a resolution.
If you like to you can change the font for example the font I was using before was bebas
and you can change things like size, shear of the text, bold, italic. I'm not going
to use any of those for now.
and the last thing is paragraph i'm going to center it and i'm also going to
take the object and move it down so it's in the center of the camera and that's
really all there is to a different himself we can see we have pretty much
the same effect that i showed before
Thanks watching everyone. I hope you enjoyed the video and more importantly I hope
you learned something.
